A landslide kills 6 people in Mumbai

Heavy monsoon rains triggered a landslide in a densely populated Mumbai neighborhood that killed at least 6 people, including two children and two teenagers, before dawn on Wednesday, August 12.

The collapse

The landslide struck before dawn when a section of hillside collapsed onto two or three homes in a tightly packed cluster of houses in the Ghatkopar suburb of India’s financial capital. Rescue teams pulled at least 10 people from the debris, of whom 6 were declared dead on arrival at the hospital, while 4 others were hospitalized, according to civic official Tanaji Kambli.

Rescue and response

The operation involved firefighters, police, the National Disaster Response Force and civic officials, but narrow access lanes prevented the use of heavy machinery. Mumbai’s mayor, Ritu Tawde, visited the area and announced financial compensation for the victims’ families.

Why it matters

Mumbai, a city of more than 20 million people, receives its heaviest rainfall between June and September. Downpours routinely flood roads and railways, and trigger landslides and building collapses, especially in crowded hillside settlements built on unstable slopes. India’s weather department forecasts more rain across western India and urged residents to remain alert.
