The 2026 school year starts on August 24 with more than two million students in Dominican classrooms. Preparing kids for the return goes beyond buying supplies: routine, organization and conversation make the difference.

Get back on a routine before the first day

In the final week before classes, gradually move bedtime and wake-up time earlier. Regular sleep improves children’s focus and mood during the first few days, which are usually the hardest.

Also plan breakfasts and backpacks with your child: having them take part in the organization gives them a sense of control and excitement about going back.

Check supplies, documents and transport

Before August 24, check that the backpack is complete and labeled, that enrollment documents are up to date, and that the route or transportation to school is confirmed. A small inventory the week before avoids last-minute rushing.

Talk about school life

Going back to school is also a moment to talk about how to behave with classmates, who to turn to in a conflict, and the importance of telling an adult if something worries them. Open communication is the best tool for children to feel safe and supported.

Why it matters

An organized return to school reduces first-week stress and lays the groundwork for a productive school year. Small preparation habits at home have a direct effect on performance and on students’ emotional well-being.
