Electronic transfers in the DR exceed 407 million a year
Foto: AcentoThe Dominican Republic recorded more than 407 million electronic transfers in 2025, a figure that contrasts with the barely 23 million in 2008, according to data presented by the Central Bank at the Digital Payments 2026 event.
From messengers to the app
The evolution of the Dominican financial system is striking: card transactions went from 117 million in 2008 to 806 million in 2025, while the use of checks keeps falling. The movement once managed with messengers and papers now happens on platforms with real-time balances.
Instant payments on the way
The Central Bank is working on an instant payments system available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, using simplified identifiers or “aliases”. The first phase, scheduled for next year, will include person-to-person and business transfers; then come payments to merchants, the government, QR codes and cross-border transactions.
The key figure
407 million transfers in 2025, against 23 million in 2008: digital payment stopped being a novelty and became the main route for Dominican money.
