The envelope method: family budget step by step
Foto: Presidencia República DominicanaThe oldest saving method remains one of the most effective: the envelope budget. It consists of distributing your monthly income into categories — food, transportation, housing, savings, leisure — and spending only what is in each envelope. When the envelope empties, that category’s spending is over.
How to apply it
- Calculate your monthly income and note fixed expenses (rent, utilities, school).
- Define categories and assign each a realistic amount (start with the 50/30/20 rule: needs, wants, savings).
- Separate the money: with physical envelopes, budgeting apps or separate bank accounts.
- Record every expense as it happens. The discipline of recording is the key to the method.
Why it works
The method turns the abstract budget into a tangible limitation: you cannot spend more than the envelope contains. It is especially useful in households with variable income and for those who tend to lose control with cards.
The key figure
50/30/20. The classic distribution: 50% needs, 30% wants, 20% savings and debt.
