Wildfires in British Columbia: 20,000 evacuated and Mexican firefighter reinforcements arrive

About a hundred firefighters from Mexico arrived in the Canadian province of British Columbia to join the fight against severe wildfires that have forced 20,000 people to evacuate.

International reinforcements

The Mexican contingent joined local crews in a season that is proving especially fierce in western Canada. Provincial authorities said adverse weather conditions, with wind and dryness, are complicating containment efforts in the area.

An extreme season

British Columbia is home to several of the country’s largest blazes, with smoke columns visible for dozens of kilometers. The evacuation of 20,000 people has strained temporary shelters and forced road closures and service suspensions in affected communities.

Experts link the intensity of the season to climate change: prolonged heat waves and accumulated drought create the conditions for fires to spread quickly and become harder to control.
