Authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo report that the ongoing Ebola outbreak has killed 2,000 people, in one of the region’s most serious health emergencies in recent years.

A regional health emergency

The outbreak is concentrated in several provinces in the east of the country, where access to health centers is limited by insecurity and poor roads. International response teams, coordinated with the World Health Organization, have deployed vaccines and mobile treatment units to contain the spread.

The challenges of containment

Vaccinating patient contacts and epidemiological surveillance are the key tools, but the terrain poses obstacles: communities that distrust medical teams and hard-to-reach areas delay early detection of new cases.

Why it matters

Ebola outbreaks in Central Africa have shown in the past their ability to cross borders if not contained in time. The coordinated deployment of vaccines and the strengthening of local health systems are the difference between a controlled epidemic and a prolonged regional crisis.
