Credit bureau: myths and realities of your history

The credit bureau is still surrounded by myths worth clearing up to understand how financial history works. The industry is about 120 years old and operates in some 190 countries; in the Dominican Republic it has operated since 1996, when Data Crédito and CICLA began, the latter acquired by TransUnion in 2005.

What a bureau really does

Its function is to collect payment history information on people and companies and turn it into indicators for those granting credit. Every time someone applies for a car, a house or a card, they are using the information the bureau organizes in their favor, because it allows risk to be assessed in hours rather than weeks.

The most common myths

It is said that bureaus invade privacy, that they categorize people violating the Constitution or that they use private information without authorization. Nothing could be further from reality: in the country they work within the legal framework that regulates them and under the supervision of the authorities. They do not decide who gets credit: they only provide information; the decision belongs to each institution.

What the customer gains

The benefit is concrete. Today a loan can be approved in a few hours and you can leave the dealership with a new car by putting down just 10% and financing the remaining 90%. Without bureaus, each institution would have to investigate every application by hand, with more time and higher costs that ultimately translate into higher interest rates.

The practical takeaway

The bureau is neither an enemy nor an executioner: it is the file banks use to trust. Keeping a clean history — paying on time and not overloading debts — opens doors to better rates and terms. Understanding how it works is the first step so credit works for you, not against you.
