Strike in Navarrete extended 24 more hours as residents demand dialogue

Community and grassroots groups in the municipality of Navarrete, in Santiago province, decided to extend the local strike by another 24 hours, amid a heavy police and military deployment, while they wait for a government commission to visit the area.

The demands

Residents are demanding that an official delegation come to Navarrete to listen to their claims for public works, community services and improvements for the municipality, and denounce that the absence of dialogue keeps tension high.

The deployment of police and military officers has been described by organizers as disproportionate, while the community insists that the solution lies at the negotiating table, not through force.
