The Instruction Court of Monseñor Nouel imposed periodic appearances and a ban on leaving the country on Pedro Alexis Henríquez López (“Alex Turey”), accused of environmental devastation in Piedra Blanca over the illegal felling of about 1,000 trees.

The case

The measure followed a complaint by the Ministry of Environment documenting illegal logging in the area, the intervention of 400 tareas of land and the opening of clandestine roads, in violation of laws 64-00 and 57-18.

The measures

The court ordered periodic appearances by the defendant and a ban on leaving the country while the process advances. Environmental devastation in protected areas has become one of the prosecution’s focus areas in recent months.

Why it matters

The case signals that illegal logging now carries judicial consequences: destroying the forest no longer comes free. Protecting the country’s watersheds and forests depends largely on these cases reaching exemplary sentences.

The key figure

1,000 trees. Those illegally felled in Piedra Blanca, Monseñor Nouel, according to the Environment Ministry complaint.
