There are victories celebrated with a margin and victories won by a chest. Ferdy Agramonte lived the second kind: he was crowned champion of the 800 meters at Santo Domingo 2026 with a time of 1:46.07, just three hundredths ahead of Venezuelan José Maita.

A tight final, decided in the last meters, giving the Dominican Republic another gold medal in the Games’ athletics.

The complete podium

  • 🥇 Ferdy Agramonte (Dominican Republic) — 1:46.07
  • 🥈 José Maita (Venezuela) — 1:46.10
  • 🥉 Jesús López (Mexico) — 1:46.86

The vindication

For Agramonte, the triumph tastes like revenge: at the San Salvador 2023 Games he had settled for bronze in this same event. Today, the Dominican climbs two steps on the podium and delivers one of the most disputed races of the athletic day.

With his gold, the Dominican Republic reaches 33 gold medals and sits tied with Puerto Rico in fifth place in the overall medal table of Santo Domingo 2026.

The key figure

0.03 seconds. Three hundredths separate gold from silver — in the 800 meters, the distance between a champion and a runner-up fits in the blink of an eye.
