The Ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM) delivered 125 Clean Cookstove kits to families from different communities in Bahoruco province, as part of an initiative replacing the use of firewood and charcoal with liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) for cooking food.

The change that saves lives

Cooking with firewood and charcoal inside homes exposes families, especially women and children, to toxic smoke that harms health and causes respiratory diseases. The transition to LPG also reduces the risk of fires and pressure on forests, a double benefit for communities and the environment.

An expanding policy

The Clean Cookstoves program is part of the government’s strategy to promote access to clean and affordable energy in rural areas. Each kit delivered represents a family leaving behind a practice that is dangerous and costly in time and health.

The key figure

125 transformed households. The concrete step toward cleaner, safer and healthier cooking in Bahoruco.
